State auditor spends 3-hour lunches in sports bar, World-Herald investigation finds – Omaha World

In the past month, over the course of 20 working days, State Auditor Charlie Janssen was observed at a Lincoln sports bar 10 times for lunches that lasted up to three hours or more.

Thursday, Aug. 16

Janssen’s vehicle was not in its State Capitol parking spot at 10 a.m., but was there when checked at 11:30 a.m. At 12:30 p.m., his pickup was seen parked outside Brewsky’s. Janssen and former State Sen. Russ Karpisek were seen leaving the bar at 3:45 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 20

The auditor’s vehicle was seen at 1:15 p.m. at Brewsky’s. A reporter watched Janssen and Karpisek finish one pitcher of beer and order another. The pair left the bar at 3:55 p.m. The auditor’s vehicle was not seen at the State Capitol afterward.

Wednesday, Aug. 22

The auditor’s pickup was seen parked outside Brewsky’s at 12:30 p.m. and at 2:30 p.m. A reporter saw Janssen and Karpisek sitting at a table, drinking a pitcher of beer and checking their cellphones. By 3:50 p.m., the auditor’s car was gone. The vehicle was not seen at the State Capitol later.

Monday, Aug. 27

At 12:18 p.m., Janssen was seen walking into Brewsky’s. He and Karpisek were seen walking out at 2:58 p.m., then driving away. The auditor’s vehicle was not spotted at the State Capitol afterward.

Wednesday, Aug. 29

The auditor’s State Capitol parking spot was empty at 9:20 a.m., but his pickup was there at 10:15 a.m. At 12:20 p.m. and at 1:15 p.m., Janssen’s vehicle was seen at Brewsky’s. Shortly before 2 p.m., he left. His vehicle was not seen at the State Capitol afterward.

Thursday, Aug. 30

At 12:15, and again at 2 p.m., Janssen’s vehicle was seen at Brewsky’s. A reporter saw Janssen and an unidentified companion finish one pitcher of beer and order another. The auditor left at 2:51 p.m., then drove to his hometown, Fremont.

Wednesday, Sept. 5

The auditor’s vehicle was seen at Brewsky’s at 2:20 p.m. A reporter saw Janssen and Karpisek leave at 2:59 p.m., but their table had been cleaned off by the time the reporter saw them.

Thursday, Sept. 6

The auditor’s parking spot at the State Capitol was empty at 10:30 a.m., but his pickup was seen there at 11:45 a.m. At 2:10 p.m. and again at 2:45 p.m., his vehicle was seen at Brewsky’s. Janssen, Karpisek and a third man were seen by a reporter inside the bar, sitting around a table, drinking beer and chatting. They finished one pitcher and ordered another. By 3:18 p.m., the auditor’s pickup had left. It was not seen later at the State Capitol.

Monday, Sept. 10

The auditor’s parking spot was empty at 10:20 a.m., but was occupied at 11 a.m. At 1:40 p.m., the auditor’s pickup was seen at Brewsky’s. At 1:53 p.m., he was observed leaving just after a friend and lobbyist, former State Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala, had left the bar. Janssen drove out of town.

Wednesday, Sept. 12

At 12:45 p.m. and again at 1 p.m., the auditor’s pickup was seen at Brewsky’s. A reporter observed Janssen and Schilz drinking a pitcher of beer. At 2:46 p.m., the auditor left the bar, got into his pickup and drove out of Lincoln. Schilz had departed a couple of minutes earlier.
