Our first look at the new TV series based on the cult New Zealand film What We Do in the Shadows is here at last.
Although the pilot was screened for a select audience at New York Comic Con earlier this month, this first general glimpse at the upcoming FX series comes courtesy of two quick teasers. It’s evident that the satiric, often brilliant humor of the movie has effortlessly found its way into the show. The clips are short, but they are right on target:
What We Do in the Shadows is not a direct sequel to the movie (which has also spawned a spinoff TV series in its home country), so the characters and Wellington setting of the film have been changed. The series takes place in the New York borough of Staten Island (where this writer grew up, and trust us, it’s not as scenic as New Zealand) and focuses on a new quartet of vampires making their way in the modern world.
The cast includes Matt Berry as Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou as his wife Nadja, Kayvan Novak as Nandor, and Mark Proksch as Colin. The latter is described as an “energy vampire” who, according to Rotten Tomatoes, drains people of their energy by “boring them to death with mundane anecdotes and bad jokes.”
The premise of the series is that these particular vampires came to America with the idea of conquering the young country hundreds of years ago, only to lose their way and forget their mission. And now they’ve received word that their ancient leader is coming to see how the conquest is going.
The original 2014 mockumentary was written and directed by Taika Waititi (who went on to direct Thor: Ragnarok) and Jemaine Clement, who also starred as two of the original vampires. Waititi directed the series pilot, which Clement wrote, and while the two are executive producers, there are as yet no plans for them to reprise their roles from the film.
What We Do in the Shadows will premiere next spring.
