Epic Games has apparently taken flak for the very challenging Skull Trooper “Ghost Portal” Back Bling challenges.
When those challenges were first revealed, we were all a little surprised by how hard they were. They included getting eliminations in 14 matches, playing a total of 50 matches, and dealing 1000 damage to opponents in a single match (among others which you can read about at the link above.)
For high-level players like Ninja these aren’t too difficult. For mere mortals like yours truly, dealing 1,000 damage in a single match is insanely difficult. I got 5 eliminations in a single match yesterday and felt pretty good about myself. But I don’t think I’ve ever dealt 1,000 damage in a single match (I’m pretty sure the five eliminations I got weren’t all fully armored bogies with full health bars; what are the chances?)
Still, it was kind of cool to see these especially challenging tasks for a special Back Bling. They’d be too hard for a weekly Battle Pass set of challenges, but for something like this, a little off the beaten path, it’s fine.
Apparently that wasn’t the feedback Epic was getting. In a post on the Fortnite subreddit today, the developer wrote:
We’ve observed the confusion around the Skull Trooper Challenge set and will be making adjustments to the pack in next week’s v6.10 update. The goal with the Ghost Portal challenges was to provide you with a way to earn a cool Back Bling through your normal play.
This weekend, we’re running a Skull Trooper Event which will allow you to earn the Ghost Portal Back Bling faster by playing 20 matches (eliminated or win) over the weekend. Beginning Friday, October 12 at 10:00AM ET and ending on Sunday, October 14 at 11:59PM ET.
You will receive the Back Bling and the challenges will auto-complete early next week.
Let the Skull Trooper Squad know to hop on and play!
Let that soak in a bit. First off, it’s cool we’re getting a special Skull Trooper Event. That should be fun.
But to nerf the Ghost Portal challenges from some of the most challenging ones we’ve ever seen to literally play 20 matches is . . . kind of crazy, to be honest. It robs the Ghost Portal of its special rarity almost entirely. Before, if you had that Back Bling you were a top player. Now you’ve just played 20 matches over the weekend. Hooray. How fun.
I don’t understand it, quite frankly. Not that it impacts me personally (I don’t even have the Skull Trooper skin!) but I dislike the change out of principle.
