Baylor musings: Matt Rhule says QB Charlie Brewer is ‘certainly our guy’

On Charlie Brewer, the 2018 season and if he’s now Baylor’s unquestioned No. 1 quarterback: “I thought at the beginning of the year, having to battle back and forth with Jalen [McClendon] was the best thing to happen to Charlie. He was trying to prove he was the starting quarterback instead of just going out and playing quarterback. I thought once he quit worrying about the competition and said ‘let me be me.’ … once Charlie did that, he played real nice football. In the Texas Tech game, it all slowed down for him. And in the bowl game, he was in a zone. … He had some storms put in front of him. He’s certainly our guy. Now is the time for him to take next step and be one of the best players in the Big 12.”

On the next step for Baylor after going 7-6: “I think we’ve made a lot of progress from the roster to everything in general. By the end of the year, we were a good college team. …. Now we have to make the jump from good to great and that’s a lot harder than going from bad to good. Everybody sees you coming. There’s no surprises.”
